Printmaking with Everyday Objects (DIY printmaking)

Creativity is available to all human activities, not just to art. Improvisation is the method and conceptual ground for art to be consistent with the way we experience life. Improvisation can be an engine for studying creativity in our daily lives and, thus, for freeing ourselves from preconceptions. The objective is to uncover what the mind can do at its freest, as it improvises, and to apply this knowledge to our daily lives.

Workshop at THIS Gallery on 12 Nov. 2022 (1-3:30pm)

During this workshop, we will stretch printmaking conventions. Employing DIY methods, we will use commonly available objects (rubber bands, paper cut-outs, leaves, bones, ferns, feathers, flour, charcoal powder) as "plates" to make repeated patterns. We may sprinkle pigment over the surface and spray it with water to develop the colour, to form varied textures. We will also experiment with frottage and collage.

In addition to synthetic inks, we will experiment with organics (coffee, henna, beets, grass) that we can find in daily life. Unlike synthetic inks, their colours change as they oxidize.

Though not required, participants can also bring their own materials, such as cardboard, or old books.
