curriculum vitae

A Korean-born immigrant to Canada, I work with movement, installation, sound, and image; movement remains central. I studied media art and dance in Canada and fine art in London, UK. Through these studies improvisation became a primary method in my practice.

My encounter with YATOO’s Nature Art in South Korea, beginning in 2015, has greatly influenced my work. Its emphasis on removing preconceptions, allowing oneself to be transformed through encounters with nature, and minimizing human intervention deepened my interest in the Zen Buddhist idea of emptiness, which has become a foundation of my improvisation practice.

I mainly use bodily movement to practice improvisation, but I also employ my knowledge of visual art and media art. I have been making site-specific work since 2015, and the concept of space became important. Since then, I have gradually been incorporating sound into my practice, investigating the relationship between sound and movement and exploring sound as a way to understand space through movement. I am currently bringing this philosophy into conventional settings such as theatres and galleries.
