Improvisation

Instant Composition

While the definition of improvisation is vague and broad, I seek a definition focused on the idea of instant composition in the context of art since the arrival of Modernism, when art started to focus on individual artistic perception. Composition is an intentional act of communication. The work communicates the intention that underlies the artist’s act of working, forming a certain structure. The structure serves as a language to communicate the intention offered in the composition. My study has been focusing on the communicative quality of art. I want to clarify my findings in the specific field of improvised performance.

Ssro Dance  스스로 춤

I studied Ssro Dance last spring in Seoul, supported by the BC Arts Council. Ssro Dance is a Korean form of improvised dance based on the idea of nothingness and was developed by the late Kim Ki-In in Korea. I received mentorship from Sung-Lul Park, a leading member of the Kim Ki-In Dance Foundation.

The basic premise of Ssro Dance is that dance is performed naturally by abandoning the judgement of our conscious mind. In a certain sense, it is a form of mediation for uniting the body and mind through bodily movement. It is largely based on East Asian Buddhist philosophies, yet without being religious or spiritual. It focuses purely on the Qi that the body generates through movement, in the absence of human emotions or psychology.

DIY printmaking (Printmaking with Everyday Objects)

Creativity is available to all human activities, not just to art. Improvisation is the method and conceptual ground for art to be consistent with the way we experience life. Improvisation can be an engine for studying creativity in our daily lives and, thus, for freeing ourselves from preconceptions. The objective is to uncover what the mind can do at its freest, as it improvises, and to apply this knowledge to our daily lives.
